Logwin organises aid shipment for Mwanga Health Centre in Tanzania

Logwin collected hospital beds and other medical aid supplies in Bad Homburg and shipped them to Tanzania.

Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) – Logwin has organised an aid shipment for the Mwanga Health Centre in Tanzania in collaboration with the Hochtaunus Hospital Centre in Bad Homburg. Donated goods are likely to reach the Mwanga Health Centre, which is situated near Mount Kilimanjaro, in February. The supplies donated by the Hochtaunus Hospital Centre in Bad Homburg include hospital beds, medicine cupboards and X-ray image viewers. The medical aid shipment is currently being transported by sea from Antwerp to Mombasa, Kenya.

The 40-foot container was loaded on December 22, shortly before Christmas. The side loader – a specially equipped truck with hydraulic arms to pick up a container and place it down on the ground again – that Logwin had ordered arrived at the loading area at around 7.00 am. It allowed loading to be performed at ground level – an advantage considering the enormous weight. "Each of the 15 beds weighed over 200 kg," explains Thorsten Korder, the project manager responsible for aid transport at Logwin. "The fork-lift lifted two stacked beds at a time and was able to drive with them directly into the container."

Packaging specialists ensured that sensitive equipment such as OP light and microscope were well protected for the long journey.

By truck, barge and container ship

The truck took the container from Bad Homburg to Frankfurt, from where it was transported by barge to Antwerp. There the shipment was finally transferred to the container ship. The ship is due to reach Mombasa in February. A partner company will assume responsibility for ongoing transport to neighbouring Tanzania.

"I am delighted that Logwin organised the transport and also clarified many administrative details – it has been of great assistance to us," says Dr Jörg Höer, the Chief Physician in the General and Visceral Surgery Department who initiated the relief operation at the Hochtaunus Hospital Centre. "The beds and equipment are now on the home straight and will soon enable better medical care at the Mwanga Health Centre."

In the past Logwin had organised aid transport on several occasions, for example on behalf of the children's rights organisation Save the Children. "It makes us proud to be able to help people in need through our work," says Thorsten Korder.
