Logwin transports sensitive air freight to Sri Lanka

Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) – The logistics service provider Logwin organized a highly sensitive air freight shipment from its Zagreb location at the beginning of November: Logwin transported 5 mine-clearance machines and accessories to Sri Lanka on behalf of the Croatian company DOK-ING, a leading manufacturer of mine-clearance equipment. The entire shipment, valued at over one million euros, weighed 35 tonnes.

Three Logwin trucks left Zagreb on 3 November. On board were five mine-clearance machines as well as pallets with spare parts and containers with tools. The trucks reached Frankfurt/Main airport in the evening of 4 November, where they were loaded onto a 747-400 the next day. Owing to the high value of the shipment and potential issues with customs clearance, Ivan Kralj, air freight specialist at Logwin in Zagreb, accompanied the convoy up to the point of loading in Frankfurt. The sensitive air freight shipment reached its destination airport Colombo on 7 November.

Besides transportation, Logwin’s logistics services included customs clearance in Zagreb, the entire handling at the airports and the creation of the necessary documentation. As dangerous goods, the mine-clearance machines were subject to the Dangerous Goods Regulation and therefore required a shipper’s DGD (dangerous goods declaration). Logwin had already performed identical transportation for DOK-ING in September.

Background information

The civil war between the Government troops and Tamil rebels in Sri Lanka is officially over. Mahinda Rajapakse, Sri Lanka’s President, declared complete victory over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May this year. The LTTE, founded in 1972, had been fighting for an independent Tamil state since the beginning of the 1980s. According to the UN, between 80,000 and 100,000 people died in the fighting. According to estimates, there could be over a million land mines buried in the north of the country.
