Volcanic eruption in Iceland

Impact on the Air Traffic

Although activity of the volcano Eyjafjalla has fallen off, increased concentrations of ash particles have once more been registered. These have affected airports in Northern Ireland and Great Britain (Scotland), which were forced to close temporarily to air traffic. Current forecasts indicate that air traffic in the rest of Europe is not likely to be affected by this – this could change, however, depending on weather conditions.

Most of the backlog of freight caused by the wide-scale closure of European air space after the volcano erupted in April has been cleared in recent days.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you once more for the understanding you have shown in the face of this unexpected exceptional situation.

Enormous backlog of air freight shipments worldwide

After a six-day shutdown in all affected European countries, air space has been reopened up for air traffic once more. According to the latest reports, restrictions on flights over Germany have been completely lifted.

An enormous backlog of air freight shipments has built up as a result of air space restrictions. The backlog of air freight on routes from and to Asia is particularly great. Most airlines are not accepting any more reservations for the time being and are not accepting any shipments. The difficulties are being compounded by the fact that several Asian airlines are not expected to be serving those destinations in Europe that had remained open until Friday of this week as a result of the unpredictable and uncertain situation.

Considerable disruptions and delays in air traffic can be expected for at least the next two weeks. At the same time, noticeable increases in air freight rates are likely.

We would ask you to accept our apologies for the anticipated delays.
