Logwin operating spare parts warehouse for German car manufacturer

Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) – The internationally operating logistics service provider Logwin started operations for a new spare parts warehouse for German car manufacturer BMW in fall 2011. The world’s largest ‘Dealer Metro Distribution Center’  (DMDC) is located in Maintal, Germany, about fifteen kilometers outside of Frankfurt. Logwin founded a branch location with distribution center there.

Since November of last year 116 BMW dealers and repair shops in the region have been receiving automotive parts and accessories from this location several times each day. The new rack facility in Maintal includes about 25,000 spaces in the small parts warehouse and 2,000 storing positions for larger items. There are almost 20,000 various articles stored in the 5,500 square meters of space.

Third DMDC for Logwin in warehousing operations

Full Service in Maintal: when goods arrive the employees inspect the deliveries and store and bin the spare parts. In the shipping area they prepare six shipments every day sent to a specific timetable. Logwin’s employees commission, pack, and load the necessary components for each of the six delivery tours. The logistics service provider primarily works with reusable packaging and organizes the returns management. Logwin uses the IT programs from BMW to manage inventory and orders. Logwin has been providing various services to BMW since the 1980s. The new DMDC facility in Maintal that the logistics company is operating for BMW is now the third along with those in Hamburg and Cologne, Germany.

Up and running in three months

Logwin’s got the spare parts warehouse up and running in a very short time. The logistics service provider was awarded the contract at the end of July. Employees received the first swap body containers with BMW spare parts already on 24 October 2011. During that interval Logwin had negotiated the rental agreement for the logistics property and shepherded many construction measures to completion, including the complete renovation of the warehouse floor, setting up changing rooms and sanitary facilities, and the new construction of a ramp area for truck loading and unloading. The warehouse was completely filled at the end of November, and three days later the first dealers in the region began receiving their deliveries. “We did everything necessary to get the DMDC up and running as quickly as possible,” says Ralf Kunert, Director Operations Logistics and Warehousing. “Everyone who participated provided excellent support in getting it done. It also allowed us to quickly provide BMW with our high quality logistics services from the new DMDC.”
