Logwin extends logistics services for AkzoNobel

- Ten years of cooperation at Stuttgart location
- New: air freight shipments to China
Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) – Anniversary: the cooperation between AkzoNobel and the international logistics services provider Logwin started with in-house logistics at the Stuttgart location exactly ten years ago. Now Logwin is also assuming responsibility for air freight shipments to China on behalf of one of the world’s leading industrial companies. Logwin organizes transport to Shanghai for AkzoNobel on a regular basis.
AkzoNobel’s business division Car Refinishes / Automotive Plastic Coatings is located in Stuttgart and manufactures, among other things, solvent- and water-based paints and varnishes used for plastic components for customers in the car industry and their suppliers. Logwin is responsible for warehousing, production provision and the distribution of the finished goods in many countries throughout Europe.
Proven performance with new standard
A distance of 50 meters separates AkzoNobel’s production site in Stuttgart from the logistics center. In the early stages of the project, Logwin operated an in-house logistics solution but now rents the 4,000 square meters hazardous goods high-rack store itself. The 6,000 pallet storage positions provide space for goods of all sizes – for 1- to 25-liter canisters, 200-liter drums or 1,000-liter containers. However, it is not just AkzoNobel products that are stored here safely: “We operate the warehouse as a multi-user location”, explains location manager Elke Weide-Klose. “The warehouse is very high-tech. Two years ago we switched our IT environment to a new warehouse management system. For example, there is a direct interface connection to AkzoNobel allowing the fast notification of orders electronically.”
Besides storage and hazardous goods and warehouse management, Logwin also organizes transportation for production supply and waste disposal. The truck shuttle makes the journey between Logwin’s warehouse and the production site several times a day. On the journey to AkzoNobel, the truck transports the ordered and picked raw materials such as pigments and binding agents, while on the journey back it carries finished goods for distribution.
Temperature-controlled all the way to the destination
One particular challenge is presented by the water-based paints, since their storage temperature must remain constant in the range 10° C to 30° C. The warehouse and trucks are temperature controlled appropriately – either heated or air conditioned. This is also true for trucks of partner companies who handle distribution. The main destinations are in Germany as well as Central and Eastern Europe. Air freight shipments to China are new.
