Logwin delivers fresh air in XXL: Oversize transport for Dürr

- Logwin delivers elements for air-filtering system
Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) – If you disassemble an exhaust-air plant into as many small components as possible some structural elements are still an impressive 13.9 x 4.4 x 3.6 meters in size. That was a shipment that Dürr, a manufacturer of so-called RTO systems, could not transport by conventional means. Dürr therefore entrusted the international logistics service provider Logwin with the transport from its production site in Niemodlin, Poland, to Ingelheim am Rhein (near Mainz) in Germany – as they had done in the past for similar-sized shipments. The recipient of the huge shipment was the pharmaceuticals company Boehringer Ingelheim.
The oversize freight had to cover a total of 830 kilometers. There were also two construction elements 10.0 x 4.4 x 3.2 meters in size on board. The plant parts weighed in at a total of 82,000 kilograms. But weight was not the biggest challenge: "This load was not even a heavy load", explains Holger Philipowski, Managing Director at Logwin Air + Ocean Project GmbH. "Challenging about this shipment was the dimensions of the plant components."
Exhaust-air plant on a VIP journey
The components' journey thus became an exclusive matter: each of the four packaged units had its own flatbed truck. Numerous tarpaulin trailers were also involved. Thanks to special authorization allowing the transport to continue over Sunday night the journey was accomplished in three days – or rather nights. "This enabled us to keep within schedule", says Holger Philipowski.
The extremely large dimensions of the transported goods also required the increased use of special equipment at the entrance to the construction site. "The load took the final hurdle perfectly with the assistance of various excavators, wheel bearings and steel plates", informs Holger Philipowski. Boehringer Ingelheim is currently expanding production capacity at its site in Ingelheim for a drug aimed at inhibiting blood coagulation. In this context the company requires an efficient and very environmentally friendly air-filtering system.
RTO units clean exhaust production air by means of thermal oxidation at temperatures of between 800° C and 900° C. Most of the energy used is recovered within the system with the help of ceramic heat exchangers. The name Dürr has stood for ecological and economic waste purification in a wide range of industries from the automotive sector to textiles and construction materials manufacture for almost 40 years. The Dürr Group employs almost 6,000 people in 21 countries all over the world and generated revenues of 1.07 billion Euros in the 2009 financial year.
