Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) – The global logistics service provider Logwin has been given an extension to its customs clearance licenses at its location in Štip, Macedonia, for another two years. Logwin employees have been performing customs clearance independently of the Macedonian authorities since 2010 – 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
Warehousing and customs under one roof
Macedonia has applied to join the European Union and so goods for the EU region are still liable to duty. The confirmation of the customs licenses means that the logistics service provider will be able to continue to work independently of the operating hours of the customs authorities. Five specially trained employees perform customs formalities autonomously around the clock. Around one-fifth of the 5,500 m² warehouse is available for this purpose.
Faster to the destination
The bundled service saves customers time with imports as well as exports. Whether at the weekend, on public holidays or late in the evening – Logwin can place arriving import goods in storage immediately and can begin to prepare the required documents straight away. The logistics specialist then releases the goods for onward transport. The process flows in the reverse direction for exports. “Depending on the destination and the means of transport, the time saved can run into several days,” says Trajan Angelov, Country Director of the Macedonian national business. Our customers really appreciate this benefit.” The logistics service provider receives orders from industries in particular that have specialized in time-critical goods. For example, fast and seasonally coordinated supply replenishment is indispensable in the field of fashion. Renowned European textile companies produce in Macedonia and benefit not only from value-added services but also from export customs processing at Logwin’s location in Štip.
Three licenses
A comprehensive customs service is made possible by the interplay of three different licenses. The first license makes Logwin an authorized consignee and consignor for transit shipments. The second license permits Logwin to perform local customs clearance for export goods. And finally the third license gives Logwin the right to use its own customs seals, which the logistics company uses for transit and exports.
Trust and supervision
Logwin cooperates closely with the Macedonian customs authorities. Logistics staff in Štip have received training enabling them to perform customs clearance in the Republic of Macedonia. Besides the expertise, they also have the same access to the electronic customs administration system as Macedonian customs officers. In return, Logwin has granted unrestricted access to its own IT application which processes the electronic documents associated with customs clearance. This allows the authorities to check that performance has been effected correctly at any time. “A powerful IT solution is one of the main prerequisites for granting customs licenses,” explains Trajan Angelov. There are two additional requirements. The company must provide evidence of three years experience in customs representation and may not have infringed tax or customs regulations.
