Computers for Tanzania – Logwin supports aid project

Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) – The logistics service provider Logwin is contributing to a school project by handling the complete transportation processing for a delivery from Germany to Tanzania free of charge. Ten computers, ten laptops, technical accessories and additional aid supplies are being sent to the East African country. The shipment also includes a complete photovoltaic solar system for lasting, ecologically friendly electricity to power the PCs.
All of the devices were donated by companies from the German state of Hesse and have a total value of about 6,600 euros. Students at the Odenwald District Vocational School Centre in Michelstadt in southern Hesse organized the aid delivery for the Mount Masusa Secondary School in Lupanga, Tanzania. “When we received the request for logistic support for this aid project, it quickly became clear that we wanted to get involved,” said Helmut Kaspers, COO of Logwin’s business segment Air + Ocean. “Our colleagues in Frankfurt worked in close cooperation with those responsible in our South African branch office in Johannesburg to process and handle the entire transport.”
Organization down to the last detail
First, all necessary documentation for the export of the technical goods had to be compiled, including the project description, packing lists, sponsoring and donation certifications from the companies, a pro-forma commercial invoice and permits from the authorities. On this basis Logwin could prepare the necessary transport and customs documentation and plan and organize the exact operations. “We are pleased that we could win an experienced logistics partner like Logwin for this project,” said Horst Schad, Senior Teacher at the Odenwald District Vocational School Centre and initiator and co-organizer of this aid project. “Now we can rest assured that the shipment will go smoothly just as planned.”
Seven-week journey
For the transport to Tanzania, approximately 7,000 kilometers away, Logwin utilized a 20-foot container so that the fragile goods are securely stowed during the entire journey. On 30 March Logwin brought the container to Michelstadt. Employees from Logwin and the Peter Ganss GmbH for Industrial Packaging from Flörsheim-Weilbach completed the further handling on location. Within just a few hours more than 40 packages with a total weight of about 2,500 kilograms were professionally packed and stowed. On 1 April Logwin transported the container with a special side-loader truck to the Frankfurt East train terminal. The freight reached Hamburg’s harbour by rail. From here the journey continues on 8 April with the MSC Loretta, and on 17 May the ship will reach the coastal city of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Logwin has engaged an experienced partner company in Tanzania to handle customs clearance and the delivery to Lupanga – about 900 kilometers upcountry. The goods are scheduled to arrive in Lupanga on 24 May.
Students from the Odenwald District will be taking care of the installation of the equipment themselves: on 22 May a teacher-student group made up of two females and seventeen males will also be travelling to Lupanga for two weeks to get the computers and photovoltaic system running and to explain the usage at the Mount Masusa Secondary School. All of them are already optimally prepared for this journey: with a short intensive language course and a one-day training by the company that donated the photovoltaic installation. “This aid project has been prepared with a lot of dedication and is pursuing a goal we consider very important – to improve the education of young people,” said Helmut Kaspers. “We are very pleased to have contributed our part to the success of this project.”
The school project “Computers for Africa”
In 2009 students and teachers of the senior level of the Odenwald District Vocational School Centre in Michelstadt started an aid project for Tanzania under the motto “Students helping students”. Their goal: make a good education possible for youth in the East African nation in order to provide them a better outlook for the future. To reach this goal the students in Hesse recruited regional companies as sponsors. These donated aid supplies and technical equipment, Logwin assumed responsibility for the transport of the equipment from Germany to Tanzania. The beneficiary is the Mount Masusa Secondary School in the city of Lupanga with a population of about 3,000.
