Anniversary celebrations at Logwin in South Africa and Indonesia

Logwin founded its branch in Jakarta 20 years ago.
Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) – The international logistics service provider Logwin is looking back on several decades in the markets of Africa and Asia. It was exactly 35 years ago that Logwin opened for business in South Africa, while the logistics specialist established its first office in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta 20 years ago. Both countries now play an important role in Logwin’s international logistics network. “We made the right decision with our choice of locations all those years ago,” explains Helmut Kaspers, COO of the business segment Air + Ocean at Logwin. “We still see significant growth potential on both the African and Asian continents.”
Five locations in South Africa
Logwin opened its first office in South Africa in Johannesburg on 27 September 1976. “In the beginning we had only a handful of staff,” recalls Patrick Federle, Managing Director Region Africa at Logwin. “Today a total of 120 employees work at five Logwin locations in South Africa.” The location in the port city of Durban was established in 1984 and was followed in the 1990s by Cape Town (1992) and Port Elizabeth (1997). Logwin then opened its office in East London in 2000. “We connect South Africa to the most important international markets and offer direct connections within South Africa as well as to destinations in neighboring countries,” says Patrick Federle. Whether international transportation, customs clearance or warehousing – the logistics service provider implements a broad range of services for customers from many different sectors including automotive and retail. Logwin expanded warehousing capacity in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2010 and as a result now manages approximately 11,400 m² of storage space in South Africa. Logwin also has a successful presence in the east of the continent, having established its own national company in Kenya in 2010 with locations in the capital, Nairobi, and in Mombasa. “Johannesburg is now home to our regional head office for the whole of Africa,” explains Helmut Kaspers. “We will also continue our commitment to this promising market in future, for example in Ghana in West Africa.”
Three locations in Indonesia
Logwin has also been providing its customers in Asia with reliable logistics services for decades. In Indonesia Logwin has had a presence for 20 years, moving into its first office in Jakarta in 1991. Sudiyono Sn, Country Director Indonesia for Logwin, has been with the company from the very beginning. “I was able to build up this location together with my team and continue to develop the range of services on offer. Many trusting business relationships have been established over the years,” he says. Beginning with a staff of eight, the company in Indonesia has grown to its present size of 56 employees at three sites.
Indonesia’s economy has been experiencing a boom for a number of years. South-East Asia’s largest economy recorded real GDP growth of 6.1 per cent in 2010. Per capita income passed the USD 3,000 mark for the first time, with private consumption being the mainstay of the economic upswing. This can also be seen, for example, in textiles, one of the main areas of focus for Logwin’s activities in Indonesia. Whereas in the past the island state produced fashion articles mainly for export, more and more imports are today reaching the country. Logwin operates its own fashion distribution center in Jakarta occupying more than 600 m² especially for the fashion segment. This is where the company organizes the delivery of fashion products of various famous fashion labels on behalf of an Indonesian wholesaler. “As a logistics specialist, we are experiencing Indonesia’s economic growth and increasing prosperity direct,” says Helmut Kaspers. “We are happy to support this positive development in a country that we have long been associated with.”
