Grevenmacher (Luxembourg) – 30 May 1972 was an important day in Logwin’s corporate history. The logistics service provider – which already operated a number of locations in Germany and Austria – ventured out onto a new continent and opened a location in Hong Kong. Logwin has experienced strong growth in Asia over the last four decades and today the company operates almost 60 locations in eleven Asian countries. There are additional grounds for celebration in China, where Logwin established its first locations in Shanghai and Dalian 20 years ago.

The move to Hong Kong 40 years ago

A major customer in the textiles sector was the reason why Logwin decided as one of the first European logistics service providers to set up its own location in Hong Kong. “Textiles remained the most important sector in Asia in the first few years,” says Tomas Sonntag, Managing Director for Region Far East Asia at Logwin’s business segment Air + Ocean. Today the company has a broad base, transporting heavy machinery as naturally as automotive components, smartphones and garments.

Asia has seen continuous economic growth for many years. To match this Logwin has steadily expanded its network of locations over the last 40 years. A single location has turned into 57 and a handful of employees have grown to over 1,000. The logistics company today operates its own locations in China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam in addition to Hong Kong. In Malaysia, for example, Logwin will be celebrating its 35th anniversary this year.

20 years in Shanghai and Dalian

Logwin opened its first offices in the Chinese cities of Dalian and Shanghai exactly 20 years ago. Since then Logwin has continued to expand its network of locations. The company opened three new offices and extended an existing one in 2011 alone. The logistics service provider today employs 450 people in over 20 locations around China and is thus one of the leading medium-sized logistics specialists in the country.

The market has changed a great deal in the past 20 years. “China continues to be primarily a producer, with goods mainly being distributed from China to Europe and North America,” explains Tomas Sonntag. “However, consumer behaviour is constantly expanding in China and leading to a demand for international brand products, too. For this reason we also now transport a wide range of goods from Europe to Asia.” One example of this significant change towards consumption is the textiles sector, where the growing demand for high-quality European fashion labels is particularly noticeable. For this reason Logwin has been offering its new “red carpet logistics” service in Beijing as well. It is specially tailored to the needs of the textiles market and to exclusive fashion articles from Europe and the USA.

“The Chinese market will continue to be very attractive for us and for our customers in the coming years,” says Tomas Sonntag. “That’s why we intend continuing to grow there in future.” There are plans to expand the existing network with nine additional locations by 2015. Logwin is also planning new offices in other Asian countries, too.
